One lonely sock, one laundromat at 3 a.m., and a rewards machine that gives you a badge for everything.
Odd Sock Out is a comedy platformer about Lefty, a striped sock who came out of the wash without his pair. The laundromat's ancient Spin Cycle Rewards machine awards a badge for everything he does: moving left, reading the WET FLOOR sign, stepping in bleach, getting pressed by the iron, pausing the game. There are 60 badges, five of them secret. The doors between the six rooms are "members only" and open at 8, 16, 24 and 32 badges, so earning silly badges is how you move forward. Past the Lint Trap and Vending Corner waits the Big Dryer and the Sock Gobbler, a lint monster with a sock hanging out of its mouth. Beat it, climb the pile in Lost and Found and reunite with Righty to finish the load. Two wash settings (Delicate and Heavy Duty), a badge book, hint terminals, 17 quarters to collect and a score built from all of it.
STORY & LORE
The laundromat
It is 3 a.m. and the front door is locked until morning (there is a badge for trying it). The building is Washer Row out front, the Folding Table in the back, a Lint Trap nobody has cleaned since 1987, a Vending Corner where Mittens the cat sleeps, and the Big Dryer, which hums all night. Lost and Found is behind the dryer.
Spin Cycle Rewards
A red rewards kiosk from a loyalty scheme the laundromat forgot to cancel. It has never stopped handing out badges, and it has very low standards. Its little green terminals are mounted in each room; talk to one and it tells you how many badges the next door wants and gives you a tip for a badge you have not earned yet.
Where socks go
Every lost sock in the world ends up in one of two places: the Lost and Found bin, or inside the Sock Gobbler. When the Gobbler pops it lets out forty-one lost socks. None of them is Righty.
CHARACTERS & ENEMIES
LeftyThe odd sockHEROA white tube sock with red stripes, a ribbed cuff and two dot eyes. Squashes when he lands, stretches when he jumps, and unravels into a pile of thread when he runs out of threads. Wears whatever colourway you equip in the quick shop.
RightyThe other halfALLYWaiting on top of the pile in Lost and Found and always matching your colourway. Touch him to end the load.
MittensLaundromat catALLYAn orange tabby asleep on the Vending Corner floor. Pet him for a badge, or land on him for a very high, very loud bounce.
The IronNever switched offENEMYPatrols the Folding Table floor trailing steam. Touching it costs a thread; jumping cleanly over it three times earns Wrinkle-Free.
Lint bunnyFluff with earsENEMYThree of them hop around the dark Lint Trap. Land on one from above to pop it (they reform after 6 seconds); bump one from the side and it snags you.
The Sock GobblerLives in the Big DryerBOSSA lint monster with red eyes and somebody's blue sock hanging out of its mouth. It stalks you, winds up and charges into the drum wall, and every third cycle spits arcing lint balls. After a charge it is dizzy: jump on it then. 3 lint-hearts on Delicate, 5 on Heavy Duty. After 90 seconds of fighting it tires out and stays dizzy for much longer, so the fight always ends.
HOW IT PLAYS
Controls
Keyboard: arrows or A/D to move, Space/W/Up to jump (hold for a higher jump), Down/S/E to use things, Down + jump to drop through a shelf, Esc/P to pause, B for the badge book. Touch: small see-through buttons, move left/right at bottom-left, JUMP and USE at bottom-right; USE glows when something is in reach. Hold USE and tap JUMP to drop through a shelf.
Badges open doors
Each room's exit door has a little sign with the number of badges it wants: 8 out of Washer Row, 16 out of the Folding Table, 24 out of the Lint Trap and 32 out of Vending Corner. The dryer door only opens once the Sock Gobbler is beaten. Every room has more than enough badges to clear its door, and the terminals hint at the ones you are missing.
Threads and unravelling
Hazards (bleach, the iron, safety pins, soda drips, static, the Gobbler and its lint balls) each cost one thread, with a short invulnerable flash. Lose them all and Lefty unravels and re-knits at the room's door with full threads. Nothing else is lost, and you get a badge for it.
Room gimmicks
Washer Row: a slippery wet floor, Washer #4 you can climb into, and bubbles to pop. Folding Table: a bouncy towel stack and the patrolling iron. Lint Trap: it is dark (a circle of light follows you) and the vents blow you up to the high shelves. Vending Corner: falling soda drips, a vending machine that takes quarters, a TV, a change machine and a mirror. Big Dryer: the drum tumbles every few seconds and flings you sideways, static flickers on the floor, and the Gobbler.
Wash settings
Delicate: 5 threads, slower iron, drips and bunnies, Gobbler has 3 hearts, tumble every 8.5 s. Heavy Duty: 3 threads, everything faster, Gobbler has 5 hearts, tumble every 6 s, and the final score is multiplied by 1.5.
Score
Badges x100 + quarters x25 + 1,500 for the Gobbler + a speed bonus of 3,000 minus 3 per second when you finish. Heavy Duty multiplies the total by 1.5. Progress scores are submitted each time you reach a new room, and the final score when you pair up.
Saving
The current load (badges, quarters, room, timer, Gobbler) saves locally and to your account. Continue it from the title screen, or start a New Load with either wash setting.
Tickets and cosmetics
Tickets are paid for playing (2), each new room reached for the first time in a load (3 each, rooms 2 to 5), beating the Gobbler (15), pairing up with Righty (20) and finishing a load that beats your previous best (10). Sock colourways are sold in the quick shop on the game page; the game reads the equipped one and checks you own it.
